Yoga is NOT about tying your self in knots.

Most of us will never come close to this very advanced yogi on the right.

We should not be forcing ourselves into positions that are inappropriate for our bodies, just for the sake of doing pretty looking poses.

We should be using yoga methodologies and postures (asanas) that are suited for our bodies. For example, the lady on the right is modiying triangle pose for the current state of her body.

We should be doing things that:
  • improve our health and well-being
  • improve our body's biomechanics and movement patterns
  • facilitate our every day life and its activities
There is no perfect pose. “It is what it is” for each individual. We are all different.

Relaxation And Release

Stretching is just a sensation. It is muscle and facia (connective tissue) release that yield the benefits.

Relaxation and body awareness are the keys to release.

Breath relaxes mind, mind relaxes body, body relaxes breath. All are interrelated.
Breath, Body, Mind, Relaxation Interrelation

No Pain, No Gain Pain, No Gain
Yoga works contrary to the old adage “no pain, no gain”. In yoga, if there is pain, then there is no gain.

Relaxation leads to mindful movement which leads to release.

When you move in pain or stretch until it hurts, you are sending signals to your brain and neurological system that this is an acceptable way to move. The brain then maintains the pattern of pain. For you to get out of pain, you need to begin to move without pain.

"The Process Is The Message" - Body Awareness

The process of doing yoga creates the benefits. Yoga is about the process, not the attainment of a goal or a pretty pose. The goal is to do the process.

The process leads to mindful awareness, and mindful awareness guides us through the process.

If you are aware of what you are doing, if you are aware of your body’s imbalances, you can effect change. You can’t change what you are not aware of.

Traveling down the path will lead you where you are meant to go.

“Yoga - Flexibility For Life” Is About:

Release And Flexibility It is about muscle and facial (connective tissue) release and shift. The release brings the benefit, the flexibility.
Relaxation Release cannot happen with out relaxation. Never force! Forcing just builds more tension and leads to injury. Let go, release and relax into postures.
Breath Breath is the vehicle that moves you toward relaxation and release. Breath relaxes mind; mind relaxes body; body relaxes breath. Restricted breathing is restricted energy flow.
Letting Go One must let go of accumulated tension in the body to obtain release. We don’t realize how much tension we are carrying until we are able to let it go.
Body Awareness Use mindful awareness to move slowly and methodically into and out of postures. Most injuries in yoga are a result of moving too far, too fast. Moving slowly with awareness puts you in touch with your body.
Ease Relaxation and release build ease; ease in the mind, ease in the breath, ease in the body, ease in movement.
Range Of Motion Building ease yields increased range of motion. Always working within your “pain free, stress free, range of motion”, bulds more ease.
Balance Yoga enhances our physical balance. But even more important, it facilitates balance in the body’s systems, and between the systems. Balance reduces stress. Reduced stress improves health and well being and yields more enjoyable and productive lives.
Calming The Mind Calming our monkey mind, the endless chatter in the mind, leads to increased awareness and concentration, and ease in our lives.
Stability Yoga promotes stability in the core, the joints and the mind.
Strength Yoga builds strength on ease, not more tension on top of tension.
Facilitating Movement A balance between strength and flexibility builds proper body alignment and ease of movement.

Build Strength On Flexibility

Building strength on tension yields more tension! First restore your flexibility with yoga, then build your strength with functional strength.

Hatha Yoga

If you ask most people what Yoga is, they would respond with some variation of “stretching”.

Although this is true, it just one facet of one type of Yoga, Hatha Yoga, the yoga of physical postures or Asanas. Combined with two other facets, breath and mindfulness, performing Yoga Asanas can be a “moving meditation”. There is no goal, only a process, a path.

I often tell people: If you perform a “stretch” using the yogic methodology (posture, breathing, body awareness and mental relaxation) you will get many times the stretching benefit, never mind the additional yogic benefits. For example the simple calf stretch normally seen in the fitness facilities. It too can be yoga if performed with the yogic methodology.

Modern Life = Stress

In previous times we only had blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, cranberries, etc. Now we have blackberries and all its stress inducing cousins: apples, cell phones, computers, email, internet, never mind downsizing, upsizing and over-sizing. These all increase the pace of life and our stress levels, and at the same time decrease our ability to cope with it. It all leads people to expect instant response and immediate gratification.

We need to decrease the pace of life not increase it. We need to slow down, to relax, to rid ourselves of the unnecessary and to reduce the complexity of our lives. Yoga can help with that.

Type of Yoga Offered

The type of Yoga taught combines the gentle, healing, calming, and adaptive principles of Viniyoga with the technical instruction of Iyengar. It utilizes a Vinyasa or flowing style of yoga that emphasizes integration of breath and movement. It stresses adapting the postures and techniques to the unique condition and needs of the individual.

We all arrive at this point in our being from different paths, with different body types, different conditioning levels and different injuries. Not every posture, or way of performing a posture, is suitable for everyone.

Yoga can help you find your own way!
