Normal Body Building Routines & Exercise Machines:

  • Revolve around muscle isolation techniques.
  • Place you on a stable base, isolate the muscles, then execute. This is good for building bulk and cosmetic purposes, but not so much for normal life or sports activities. Example: the lady to the right. There is nothing wrong with the exercise itself, BUT, it only works the bicept in isolation.
Normal Body Building Routines & Exercise Machines

The Problem:

The problem is that our muscles do not work in isolation. Our brain recruits groups of muscles in patterns to perform any given movement. Think of moving your groceries from your floor to the shelf. Will machine bicep curls or tricep extensions help with this? Yes they will to some extent. But they do little to integrate bicept with the other muscles that support this type of activity in a real life situation. The progression to the right develops the bicept in concert with muscular support systems; shoulders, core, hips, knees, legs, feet, etc.

Functional Exercises

Functional Exercises:

  • Are designed to restore strength, flexibility, stability and balance.
  • Recruit groups of muscles for each exercise the way you body does in normal activities.
  • Use movement patterns specific to one’s life activities and work or sports activities, for example the movement patterns required for golf.
  • Build balanced strength to create stability.
  • Promote good posture, mobility and coordination.
  • Build a strong core as your base of support.
  • Restores stability to the joints and balance throughout the musculoskeletal system.
  • Utilize exercises selected from the most applicable discipline for the purpose; Muscle Conditioning, Yoga, Therapeutic Yoga, Pilates, etc.; whatever works best for the desired effect.

What equipment is needed?

  • No expensive equipment is actually needed. It's nice to have, but it's not absolutely necessary.
